There were three key advantages in this choice of name

FIRSTLY

The pen came out of research in 1939 and was put on sale experimentally in that year which was the company’s 51st anniversary (1888-1939)

SECONDLY

The company wanted to use a designation made up of numbers rather than letters so that attention was not drawn away from the primary trademark., Parker.

THIRDLY

The company had ambitious plans for marketing the pen abroad and wanted a name that would translate easily into any language.
